UTERINE FIBROIDS

What is Uterine Artery Embolization?

Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat uterine fibroids—noncancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure. UAE offers an alternative to surgery for women who want relief from fibroid symptoms while keeping their uterus.

How Does It Work?

During UAE:

  • A small catheter is inserted through a tiny incision in the upper thigh/groin.
  • Using imaging guidance, the catheter is directed to the arteries that supply blood to the uterus.
  • Tiny particles (about the size of grains of sand) or coils are injected to block blood flow to the fibroids.
  • Without a blood supply, the fibroids shrink over time, relieving symptoms.

Benefits of UAE

  • Minimally invasive: No large incisions or general anesthesia
  • Quick recovery: Patients go home within a few hours
  • Effective relief: Reduces heavy bleeding, pain, and pressure
  • Preserves the uterus: Ideal for women who want to avoid hysterectomy

UAE is performed by our board-certified vascular surgeons and is safe for many women, though not recommended during pregnancy or for those with certain infections or allergies
