UNDERSTANDING YOUR CONDITION

What Is an Enlarged Prostate?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged. As the prostate grows, it can press against the urethra and interfere with the normal flow of urine.

For men experiencing bothersome urinary symptoms, Prostate Artery Embolization offers a minimally invasive treatment that reduces blood flow to the enlarged prostate, allowing it to shrink and relieving pressure on the urinary tract.

Common Symptoms

  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary urgency
  • Weak urine stream
  • - Difficulty with normal urine flow

How We Treat an Enlarged Prostate

Prostate Artery Embolization offers a minimally invasive approach to BPH treatment by reducing blood flow to the enlarged prostate without traditional surgery.

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)⌄

Prostate Artery Embolization is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. During the procedure, a small catheter is inserted through an artery in the upper thigh or groin.

Using imaging guidance, the vascular surgeon guides the catheter to the arteries supplying blood to the prostate. Tiny particles or coils are then delivered to block these arteries. Reducing the blood supply causes the prostate to shrink, helping relieve pressure on the urinary tract and improve symptoms.  The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • No surgical incision
  • No general anesthesia
  • Patients go home within a few hours
  • Lower risk of sexual dysfunction and incontinence compared with traditional surgery
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your Questions, Answered

What is Prostate Artery Embolization?⌄

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment for an enlarged prostate, or BPH. The procedure reduces blood flow to the prostate, causing it to shrink and helping relieve pressure on the urinary tract.

Who may be a candidate for PAE?⌄

PAE may be an option for men with urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate who want to avoid surgery. Middle Tennessee Vascular also identifies it as an option for some patients who aren't candidates for traditional surgery because of other health conditions. A consultation is needed to determine whether PAE is appropriate for an individual patient.

What is recovery like after PAE?⌄

PAE is performed without a surgical incision or general anesthesia. Middle Tennessee Vascular states that patients can typically go home within a few hours after treatment. Individual recovery and results can vary.
